Planing Ahead & Heavy Traffic

  • Traffic Conditions: Check your sat nav and Google for unusual traffic due to events, holiday getaways, and tourism.
  • Peak Times: Avoid heavy traffic on Fridays and Saturdays, common “changeover” days for holidays.

Heavy Traffic Tips

  • Anticipate Traffic: Watch the road ahead, not just the car in front. Slow down early to keep moving smoothly.
  • Fuel Efficiency: Avoid the ‘concertina effect’ to save fuel and increase safety.

Stay Hydrated and Topped Up

  • Vehicle Fluids: Ensure all fluids, especially screenwash, are topped up.
  • Personal Hydration: Drink water regularly; even 2% dehydration can reduce concentration by 20%.

Driving On Holiday

When driving abroad check the local rules & laws: Understand local driving rules, speeds, signage, and habits before you set off.

Check your company car policy: Check for permissions and requirements for towing or taking company vehicles abroad.

Other Safety Reminders

  • Sunglasses: Always have a pair ready for bright conditions.
  • Spare Key: Carry a spare key to avoid being stranded.
  • Manage Distraction: Set ground rules for passengers to minimise distractions (see our full advisory on driver distraction here)
  • Plan Routes and Rest Stops: Have a plan for routes, rest stops, and alternatives if traffic gets heavy.

Hire Cars: 4 Tips To Stay Safe

  1. If you are planning to use a hire car abroad, firstly make sure you have the relevant documentation for that country (i.e UK or International driving licence), or it will be a very short drive.
  2. Once you have the car, take pictures on your phone of every dent and scratch so there are no dispute when you hand it back.
  3. Then take some time to acclimatise to the new controls while parked. Start with pedals and work up, through handbrake, air con and dashboard controls to those closer to eye level such as steering wheel buttons, stalks and instruments.
  4. Do not start until you are completely happy with where all functions are, and how to operate them. Learning about them while driving in unfamiliar conditions is not the time, or the place, to do this safely.
