Heavy Rain 🌧️

Driving in heavy rain can greatly reduce visibility and make roads slick and dangerous.

Key steps to take:

  • Slow Down: Wet roads increase stopping distances. Reducing speed allows for better control.
  • Keep Distance: Allow extra space from the car in front to respond to sudden stops or swerves.
  • Avoid Puddles: Puddles may conceal potholes or create slippery surfaces from diesel spills.
  • Handle Aquaplaning: If your car begins to skid, ease off the accelerator and hold the steering wheel steady to regain traction.
  • Disable Cruise Control: Keep full control over the vehicle’s speed for immediate response in unpredictable conditions.

High Winds 💨

High winds can push vehicles off-course, especially on open or exposed roads.

  • Slow Down and Stay Focused: Sudden gusts can push vehicles off course; a slower pace allows time to adjust.
  • Watch for Large Vehicles: High-sided vehicles are more prone to sway; give them ample space.
  • Grip the Wheel Firmly: A strong hold on the steering wheel helps stabilise the vehicle during gusts.
  • Avoid Exposed Routes: Plan to avoid open roads where wind impact is higher.

Flooded Roads 🌊

Flooding can make roads impassable and damage vehicles.

  • Avoid Crossing Floods: Flood depth and road conditions can be unpredictable. Don’t cross if unsure.
  • Check Water Depth: If necessary, assess depth before proceeding. If the water is deep or moving, don’t enter.
  • Enter Slowly: If crossing is safe, go slowly to avoid creating a wave that could flood the engine.
  • Never Cross Moving Water: Fast-moving water can carry vehicles off course.
