A theory test case study is a driving scenario that will be presented to you during your theory test. In the case study, you’ll be expected to answer questions about the scenario related to location, surroundings and how they relate to potential hazards.
In your driving theory test, you will need to answer 50 multiple-choice questions in total. Five of these are multiple choice questions that relate to the case study, with another 45 general multiple choice questions.
Study for driving test: case study section
The case study section of the driving theory test is important in assessing your ability to apply driving knowledge in real-world situations, make the appropriate decisions in practical situations and test your knowledge of safe driving.
To start practising for your theory test, download the Learn To Drive With RED app. This driving app has a collection of mock tests that allow you to practice answering multiple-choice questions and case studies that can help prepare you for your theory test.
The case study scenario could cover a range of situations that could occur whilst you are driving, and you are tested on your ability to react to these scenarios. These may include:
A case study appears like the below example; you’ll see a description of a driving scenario on the left hand of your screen, and a choice of answers on the right hand side. We recommend you read this case study through more than once to ensure you have understood the scenario before answering the questions.
All five multiple-choice questions will be related to the same case study and will typically look like the above on your screen. You can read through this case study multiple times, and the questions will clearly state to mark one answer. Once you have completed one question, it will take you to the following. Please note you can not return to previous questions, so you need to select an answer before you press next.
Thorough preparation is essential for this part of the test. The best way to prepare is by familiarising yourself with the Highway Code, which covers the rules and guidelines for safe and legal driving in the UK. In addition to studying the Highway Code, it is also highly recommended to practice with mock case studies and tests. These practice tests can help you develop your decision-making skills and ensure that you can apply theoretical knowledge in realistic driving situations.
Being prepared will not only build your confidence but also improve your chances of passing the driving theory test on your first attempt. Remember that the case study section is designed to mimic real-world driving experiences, so the more you engage with these practice scenarios, the more prepared you will be to handle similar situations when you’re on the road.
RED has you covered with the Learn To Drive With RED app. Everything you need to learn and practise to be more prepared for your driving theory test – plus there is a 30-day free trial!
